The BIG Search: Kansas City

October 18th-20th

Imagine someone you love disappearing without a trace…

one day…

two days…

a year…

no word from them.

Questions would continually be running through your mind. Are they being abused or raped? Are they being exploited for someone else’s profit? Are they even alive?

This is the reality for the families and friends of the children we will be looking for. Each face represents someone’s son or daughter, someone’s loved one.

As the search gets closer we will be posting the Missing Children’s Booklet and encourage you to download and study the faces and if you see a face that looks familiar please call 9-1-1. YOU could be the one that helps rescue a missing child and helps them get home to their family and loved ones.

I Can Help!

The BIG Search was created as an event that can be hosted in multiple cities across the U.S. to coordinate volunteer groups and organizations to search for missing children within that city’s area.

The BIG Search was started in 2009 by Brad Dennis, of KlaasKIDS, and Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking in Tampa Bay as a collaborative outreach during the Super Bowl. Since then, The BIG Search has conducted searches at every Super Bowl city, except in 2017, where it exclusively took place in Las Vegas. The BIG Search has also taken place at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Kentucky Derby, and many other major events. The success of these efforts has led to two 90-minute presentations to the National Association of Attorneys General, been chronicled in major Law Review Journals and led to the receiving of the 2015 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award.

During this outreach effort, we will be distributing booklets and baseball cards with information on youth who are missing in our community. This search will build the capacity of our community to identify and respond to the needs of missing and exploited youth.
The search takes place over a 3-day period from 8am-10pm, with shifts of volunteers going out together searching for the missing children and reaching out to the local community for help.
All volunteers will be screened and are required to attend orientation and MUST bring both a photo ID and completed waiver* to the orientation. The minimum age for volunteers is 18 years old. Volunteers will work a four hour period in small groups of 4-10 people. At the start of the shift, volunteers report to their assigned command central to pick up booklets and the route for their outreach effort. At the end of the shift, volunteers report back to the assigned command central to debrief. *You will receive the waiver with your sign-up confirmation email.

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 5:30pm – 7:00pm we will be hosting a volunteer training at Hendrick Lexus, 6935 W Frontage Rd, Merriam, KS 66203. To sign up for the training please click here and fill out the form to register.
